Hello, Please ask a question about LTC4218CDHC Datasheet
# Example questions:
➢ What happens when the fb pin voltage drops below 0.6v?
➢ What is the primary difference between the ltc4218 and the ltc4218-12 versions of the device?
➢ The timer pin utilizes two different current sources. what are the current magnitudes and what are their respective functions?
1. Functionality Overview:
️· Controlled Power-Up/Down: The LTC4218 is a power controller designed to safely insert and remove a board from a live backplane (a common setup in industrial and communication equipment). It handles turning power on and off in a controlled way.
️· N-Channel MOSFET Driver: It drives an external N-channel MOSFET. The device contains a charge pump and gate driver circuit to control the MOSFET's operation.
️· Current Limiting: Monitors the load current using a current sense resistor. Actively limits the current through the MOSFET to protect the system. A foldback feature reduces the current limit significantly in the event of a short circuit.
️· Timer: A timer feature helps prevent overheating during persistent overcurrent conditions.
️· Two Versions: Two main versions are available:
- LTC4218 (Adjustable): Allows for external adjustment of various thresholds (undervoltage, overvoltage, current limit) using external resistors. Comes in an SSOP package.
- LTC4218-12 (Fixed): Has fixed internal dividers for pre-set voltage thresholds. Designed for 12V operation. Available in a DFN package.
2. Key Features and Pins:
️· SENSE [+] and SENSE [–]: Current sense inputs.
️· GATE and SOURCE: Control and return for the external MOSFET.
️· UV (Undervoltage): Detects low supply voltage; turns off the MOSFET.
️· OV (Overvoltage): Detects high supply voltage; turns off the MOSFET.
️· ISET: Adjusts the current limit threshold.
️· TIMER: Used for overcurrent protection (timer before shutdown).
️· IMON: Provides a current output proportional to the load current for monitoring.
️· INTVCC: Requires a decoupling capacitor (0.1μF or larger).
️· FLT: Overcurrent fault indicator (open-drain output).
️· PG: Power Good indicator (open-drain output).
️· FB: Foldback comparator input, monitors the output voltage for fault conditions.
3. Operation Highlights:
️· Controlled Startup: The device requires the external conditions to be validated before the MOSFET is enabled.
️· Foldback Current Limiting: Reduces current limit under short circuit conditions.
️· Automatic Retry: After a fault (overcurrent, short circuit), the device will attempt to restart after a cool-down period.
️· Power Good: The PG output signals a valid power state.
4. Package Information
️· The LTC4218 is available in an SSOP package
️· The LTC4218-12 is available in a DFN package.
